And as well as increasing your knowledge, you’ll be joining a city going places – Aberdeen has been rated as one of the Top 10 places to live and work in the UK.

With such a vibrant environment to host your studies, choosing the right course for you at RGU can pose a challenge – offering such a fantastic range of interesting subjects to entice you in. So where to start in choosing a course that offers the right mix of subjects, all delivered in a way that suits your experience, previous studies, and preferred study style? And then there’s the small matter of fitting study around your hectic life? No stress – here’s our handy guide…

Undergraduate or postgraduate?

Firstly, you’ll need to choose the appropriate level of your study – undergraduate or postgraduate. Undergraduate study is classed as a first degree in the UK and applications are traditionally made from college or sixth form via UCAS to a number of institutions. Postgraduate study applications are typically made directly to a university and are generally started once previous undergraduate studies have been successfully completed.

However, if you have considerable knowledge and work experience gained in a particular field, you may be eligible to apply for both undergraduate or postgraduate level courses via RGU’s widening participation programme. Before making an application, check with the admissions team.

What study mode?

What is the best study mode to suit your lifestyle? Perhaps you have plenty of time on your hands and can commit to full-time hours. If keeping your income flowing is imperative while you study, you’ll need a part-time study option to juggle around a job. Or if you prefer home comforts you may like the idea of learning online rather than the traditional classroom style. Whatever your learning style, at RGU you’ll be able to choose from full-time, part-time, and distance-learning options to suit your individual circumstances.

If distance learning sounds like it could be your thing, you’ll find 12 varied online distance learning courses to choose from across the arts, business, and science subjects. Distance-learning course content is delivered via Campus Moodle – RGU’s online virtual learning environment. This great resource includes a library, online study support resources, and employability resources.

What to study?

Whatever your background or career goals, RGU offers an excellent choice of courses covering subjects including the arts, business, and sciences. So, whether you’re a budding financial director, an aspiring fashion designer, or an ambitious pharmacist looking to step up the career ladder, you can choose from excellent Accounting and Finance, Art and Design, and Pharmacy and Life Sciences courses available at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Business

A career in business offers the chance to learn skills allowing you to specialise in one of the many functions required for leaders in organisations; skills in demand by public, private, and third sectors. Aberdeen Business School offers Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in subjects including accounting and finance, business management, economics, and marketing management, so there’s a course for all business specialisms. Some courses offer a bonus of placement years in the industry, helping you to gain experience to give your career a boost.

Arts

If you’re strongly artistically inclined, choose from art and design or fashion courses. Delivered at Scotland’s Gray’s School of Art, courses offer a hands-on, project-based approach where the majority of your time will be spent in the studio and workshop.

Applied social sciences

From applied psychology to social work, the School of Applied Social Sciences offers courses ideal for college students through to experienced practitioners.

Computing science and digital media

From computer science to IT software development, there is a course for all computer-science specialists and experienced computing professionals looking to upskill at the School of Computer Science and Digital Media.

Science and Engineering

The scientific and engineering industries are always on the lookout for talented graduates and RGU offers an excellent variety of courses to equip you with skills in demand by employers. Choose from courses including health and sport science, pharmacy and life sciences, and nursing and midwifery. Or courses in architecture, construction and surveying, engineering or energy.

A number of RGU courses are also ideal for those in industry who are looking to gain accreditations in their sector: RGU has IMechE approval for Masters-level modules as further learning for Chartered Engineer registration. And a number of RGU’s Energy subjects are accredited by the Energy Institute.

Whatever you’re looking to study, remember to always choose a subject you’re passionate about, a study mode that fits around your lifestyle and which provides the right match for your ambitions. Get the right mix and your course will be a great catch!

All the best,
