Between academic obligations, social commitments, and trying to find the free time to just be yourself, life as a student can become surprisingly stressful very quickly. Throw in the pressure of having to squeeze in study time within a highly social environment, and it’s easy to see how distractions and stressful situations can seemingly pop up out of nowhere. If you’ve been struggling to cope with student life, try taking the following steps to stop stressing out.
1. Secure Comfortable Student Accommodations
Your living arrangements and primary surroundings can have a direct impact on your mood and outlook on life. If you position yourself to be crammed into a crummy apartment across town where you have to commute via public transport every day, chances are you’re going to be more stressed out than if you were to stay in a cosy, conveniently located dorm near campus. You can compare accommodation by searching for locational terms like “student accommodation in Madrid” or look at Collegiate’s offerings to get an idea of what’s out there.
2. Stick to a Stable Schedule
Once you’ve taken care of the comfort and convenience aspects of student life, it’s time to create a failproof schedule that will simplify and streamline your daily routine. In essence, you want to take all of the guesswork out of what you’re supposed to be doing and when you’re supposed to be doing it. Studies have proven that a consistent and predictable schedule can help reduce stress by facilitating mental decluttering.
3. Balance Education with Entertainment
Too much academia and not enough enjoyment can be a recipe for maximum stress, boredom, depression, loneliness, and all sorts of other negative emotions. Even if you’re highly enthusiastic about your studies, eventually you’ll need to set aside time to smile and enjoy yourself. Thus, it’s important to include fun events and outings in your schedule to avoid the hectic feeling that comes with “too much work and not enough play.”
4. Be More Sociable
Closing yourself off and focusing solely on your studying might seems like the best way to achieve maximum productivity, but without some sort of social stimulation, you’re most likely going to become depressed and/or stressed. Make the most of your university experience and view every day as an opportunity to meet new people and make new memories. Students who deal with social anxiety or those who are generally anti-social may find the relationship-building aspect of college to be the most stressful. In that case, staying in touch with old friends and family members is the best way to take your mind off of things in a therapeutic way.
Don’t Forget the Importance of Diet and Sleep
If you’re doing all of the above but you’re still living off mostly processed foods and you aren’t getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night, you’ll still probably feel stressed simply because your body won’t be getting the fuel it needs to thrive. Thus, every student should try to eat more nutritiously and sleep well every night, not only to feel less stressed but also to perform better academically.
