Snapshots from Rome! Photo Diary

I study Ancient History at King’s College London, and our department is amazing enough to offer an expenses-paid trip each year, to see the classical art and archaeology we’ve been studying in real life. We spent a few days in Rome, and it was absolutely incredible.

Our itinerary was jam-packed with museum visits, and tours of ancient monuments, including some super-special places that aren’t open to the public! Needless to say, we were all exhausted by the end of the trip and ate our weight in pizza and gelato.

Side note: this is my 100th blog post! Without further ado, here are some pictures of the places I got to see…

Rome
The Colosseum
Inside the Colosseum
The Pantheon
Rome
Castel Sant'Angelo
Sculpture in the Capitoline Museum
“When you’re in a museum and the sun’s in your eyes”

Our department had competitions for the best photos and captions, so most of us spent a lot of time trying to come up with funny captions for Instagram. I won a few prizes!

Inside the Colosseum
River in Rome
The Ara Pacis

It was incredible to see the Ara Pacis in real life. I love how they constructed a glass building around it for protection!

Inside the Vatican

On the final day of the trip, we visited the Vatican. We went into the catacombs beneath the cathedral and saw the actual bones of Saint Peter. It was pretty spectacular.

The Trevi Fountain
The Column of Marcus Aurelius
The 'Dying Gaul'

Out of all the museums we visited, the Capitoline Museum is my favourite. It’s amazing – I wish we had more time to look around.

Venus Sculpture
The Mausoleum of Augustus

The Mausoleum of Augustus was another highlight of the trip.

I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to visit Rome as part of my degree!

All the best,

- Emily
